GREENE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - A man in prison for second-degree murder has been charged with killing a fellow prison inmate at Greene Correctional Institution.
Wilbert Baldwin was charged with murder today by Greene County deputies. The 38-year-old was given no bond and has been moved to Maury Correctional Institution, which is also in Greene County.
Ernest Nichols was discovered in his cell block around 6:50 a.m. Sunday.
The 60-year-old Nichols was convicted in 2011 of statutory rape that happened in Mecklenburg County. He was projected to be released from prison in September of 2027.
Baldwin is serving a 20-year sentence for second-degree murder that happened in Richmond County back in 2007.
Greene Correctional had been on lockdown since the murder happened.
