CLEVELAND — Akron's St. Vincent-St. Mary High School has canceled its upcoming varsity football game against Harvest Preparatory School, saying a combination of injuries and illnesses has "affected the team's roster and ability to safely compete."

The private school made the decision to scrap the Friday contest after a small number of players recently came down with a bacterial skin infection, compounding a rash of injuries — some of which were season-ending, STVM said — that depleted the roster.

STVM said it consulted with the Akron Children's Hospital athletic training staff before making the decision to allow the team to "focus on player recovery and evaluate the path forward for the remainder of the season."
