Seven Australians who were detained in Israel after they were intercepted on-board an aid flotilla headed to Gaza have been deported to Jordan, the office of Foreign Minister Penny Wong has confirmed.

The Australians were captured on Thursday after Israeli officials seized the mass flotilla attempting to break the aid blockade into the Gaza Strip.

A spokesman for Senator Wong welcomed the development and said Australian officials would continue to provide help to the Australians.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade continues to provide consular assistance to Australians who were detained in Israel,” they said.

“We are pleased they have been released from detention.”
