A climber has died near Mount Everest after getting caught in a powerful snowstorm, as hundreds of hikers remain trapped on the world’s highest peak in extreme conditions.

The climber, a South Korean national, died after getting caught in a storm while ascending a Himalayan peak just south of Everest.

He was initially reported missing over the weekend near the summit of Mera Peak, a 21,250-foot mountain in Nepal.

His death was confirmed by the Nepal Mountaineering Association on Tuesday. 3

It comes as hundreds of climbers remain trapped on Mount Everest following extreme weather. 3

On Sunday, nearly 1,000 hikers were left stranded on the peak after a huge blizzard ravaged the range’s eastern slope over the weekend, according to Chinese state media.
