A large sinkhole opened in a Venice street Tuesday morning after a water main break that left some residents in the neighborhood without water into the afternoon.
The 16-inch underground pipe, estimated at more than 100 years old, broke sometime between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. on North Venice Boulevard. One resident said she went outside after hearing what sounded like rainfall.

"It sounded like a lot of rain," said Stacey. "I came outside and saw a sea of mud, went around the corner and was surprised to see a crater there."
Photos showed a car near the sinkhole in the moments after it developed, but all vehicles were safely moved out of the way. No damage was reported to cars or homes.
