MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) – Artificial intelligence (AI) may become key in helping emergency dispatchers in Montgomery County focus on actual emergencies.
911 operators often find themselves inundated with non-emergency calls. Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) officials say that’s where AI could come into play.
Montgomery County’s emergency communications director, Jennifer Reidy-Hall, says nearly half of the 911 calls they receive are non-emergency calls. She says using AI to handle those could free up dispatchers to field more serious calls.
“The greatest struggle we face, which is mirrored by nearly all 911 centers in the nation, is having enough staff to manage the call volume that comes into our center," Reidy-Hall said.
