LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - After a long stretch of warm weather, fall temperatures are finally here. But, with the abrupt weather changes, it raises concerns for fires and damaging crops.
Even with the recent rainfall, most of Mid-Michigan is still in a drought.
“When a drought is at 300, that is bad. And our drought codes right now are 500 to 600,” said MDNR Resource Protection Manager Jeff Vasher.
Although it may be a moment of relief for the crops and soil, Vasher says it’s not enough to sustain moisture on the ground.
“It’ll dry out again, and it will be right back where it was,” Vasher said. “What we need is a 2–3-day steady rain all day long [so] it can soak in. But our drought codes are so high it’s going to take a lot of rain to get us back to where we need to be.”
