Ensemble Montréal mayoral candidate Soraya Martinez Ferrada said Tuesday that Montreal police would begin wearing body cameras if she’s elected, part of a series of promises aimed at helping Montrealers feel safer.

While crime in Montreal isn’t worse than in other large cities, she said, there’s been a deterioration in the public’s sense of security , particularly downtown, on public transit and in Chinatown, she said, blaming that on a rise in homelessness and organizations offering services to people experiencing homelessness becoming overwhelmed, as well as general uncleanliness.

“Many merchants, when they come to their stores in the morning, don’t feel safe just opening or closing down their stores, and I think Montrealers want to feel safe in the city again,” Martinez Ferrada told r
