A South Shore resident accused of spying on Hydro-Québec for China saw his trial begin at the Longueuil courthouse Tuesday with the court hearing testimony from two witnesses on what might be placed under a publication ban during the proceedings.

Yuesheng Wang, 38, of Candiac, was arrested in 2022 by the RCMP while he was employed by the utility. He was charged with obtaining a trade secret for the benefit of China to the detriment of Canada’s economic interests; fraudulently obtaining a computer service; knowingly obtaining a trade secret; and breach of trust.

Following his arrest, Wang, who is represented by defence lawyer Gary Martin, was granted bail after a judge found there was no evidence to suggest he would flee Canada to avoid a trial.
