COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Orangeburg City Council passed its own hate intimidation ordinance unanimously at its regular Tuesday meeting.

The addition to the city’s police codes would make it illegal for anyone to cause harm or injury to a person because of the victim’s “race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sexual orientation, religion, gender or gender identity.”

The crime would be punishable by up to 30 days in prison or a $500 fine.

The new ordinance only applies within the city’s limits; however, Orangeburg County recently passed its own hate intimidation ordinance that covers other parts of the area.
