WASHINGTON — The Washington Capitals will play in front of their home fans for the first time this season Wednesday night when they welcome the Boston Bruins to Capital One Arena in downtown D.C.
The Capitals are coming off a 51-22-9 season that saw them finish in first place in the Metropolitan Division before exiting the Stanley Cup playoffs in the second round.
The campaign was highlighted by Alex Ovechkin setting the all-time career scoring record for the league.
Ovechkin scored 44 goals in the season, improving his career total to 897 to eclipse Wayne Gretzky’s 894 career goals. He needs nine games to become the eighth player in NHL history to play 1,500 games with one franchise.
In addition, Ovechkin needs 19 points to pass Joe Sakic for 10th on the NHL’s all-time points list.
