RAYNE, La. (KPLC) - The sugarcane harvest season has begun, and the crop plays a big role in Louisiana’s economy.
“So far, we’re looking at great conditions. It’s a little bit dry, and the cane is dehydrated. Yields are down a little bit more than what we expected, but the sugar levels are reall,y really good,” sugarcane farmer Chad Hanks said.
Hanks is a sugarcane farmer and owner of advanced agriculture, where he oversees 3,500 acres of sugarcane crops.
This is his 35th harvest, where he cuts down the crop and takes it to the mill to produce sugar.
“This was probably one of the best growing years that I’ve experienced in my 35 years. We had rain, we had dry, we had sun, and we replenished. We never really had any kind of extended period of dryness,” Hanks said.
