ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - The Alexandria City Council unanimously voted to declare a self-proclaimed “grim” public emergency due to the economic and health risks associated with a fire-damaged building , among other structures.

The fire-damaged Guesthouse International Inn and Suites, located at 2211 North MacArthur Drive, caught fire on September 26.

According to Mayor Jacques Roy, who was present at the city council meeting on October 7, the fires were caused by nearby homeless people believed to be taking shelter in the building.
