The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is preparing to tackle fraud and error with strengthened powers. Enhanced scrutiny of personal information, including bank account details, will be introduced alongside more rigorous verification procedures.

The department plans to deploy these new capabilities in 2026 to recover debts related to Personal Independence Payments (PIP). Government documentation concerning the Public Authorities (Fraud, Error and Recovery) Bill states that the enhanced powers "will reform the legislative framework to safeguard taxpayers' money by helping identify, prevent and deter fraud and error across the public sector, and enable the better recovery of debt owed to the taxpayer."
