PUYALLUP, Wash. — A Puyallup High School cross-country runner remains hospitalized after being struck by a driver in a pickup truck during team practice Monday afternoon. The incident has shaken a quiet residential neighborhood and sparked calls for immediate safety improvements.

The collision occurred around 4 p.m. at the intersection of 7th Street Northeast and 2nd Avenue Northeast as members of the cross country team were running eastbound during their training run. The teen was hit by a driver traveling southbound through the intersection.

Nearby resident Jessica Orth witnessed the devastating impact unfold directly in front of her as she drove to pick up her daughters from school just one block away.
