Evacuation efforts were underway in northern Vietnam Wednesday after torrential rains in the aftermath of typhoon Matmo triggered widespread flooding in the region, leaving three dead and several missing, authorities said.
The typhoon, despite not hitting Vietnam directly, brought heavy rains Tuesday that made rivers swell, flooding streets, submerging houses and caused numerous landslides in the region that had already battled four other typhoons and tropical storms since September.
Authorities said three people were killed in landslides in Cao Bang and Thanh Hoa provinces, with four others missing in Thai Nguyen and Thanh Hoa provinces after being swept away by the flood.
In hard hit Thai Nguyen, overwhelming river flooded several communities. Local residents said the flood rushed in so quickly that they were not able to move furniture. Some neighborhoods were isolated and authorities deployed rescue boats to deliver aid.
The rain stopped Wednesday but alerts remained in place for low-lying areas where flooding is expected to remain until the weekend.
