American Airlines is getting rid of metal bag-sizers at its gates.

The sizers are used to check if a bag is small enough to be a carry-on.

The airline says the change further simplifies the boarding process.

Gate agents will now be asked to use their judgment about whether a bag is too big and needs to be checked -- and if they're not sure, to err on the side of the customer.

Sizers will still be available in check-in lobbies, so customers can see if their bag is the right size to be carried on before going through security and then boarding areas.

The move mirrors United Airlines, which removed its gate bag-sizers five years ago.
