ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) — New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) is proposing a double-digit rate hike for the 2026-2027 billing year. New York State's Public Service Commission (PSC) is holding public comment sessions across the state about the potential hike.

Dozens of people filled the Ithaca Town Hall on Wednesday afternoon to give their opinions on the proposed rate hike, both for and against it. During the time WENY News was at the meeting, only one person showed up to show their support.

Frustration and anger seemed to be the feelings while many people spoke out against the rate hike. The hearing, hosted by the PSC, is part of a public comment period required before the commission approves or denies a rate increase request.
