SPARTANBURG, S.C. —

The city of Spartanburg says it is expecting to lose about 275 surface parking spaces over the next two years as construction on multiple projects downtown near.

The largest surface parking lot in downtown, located on Kennedy Street at the former site of city hall, permanently closed on Sunday. This is due to construction for the future joint government building for the city and county.

"There are lots of people who've been coming downtown for years and years, and they've been utilizing that surface parking," city spokesperson Christopher George said. "The fact that they've never had to go to garages before means that there's a bit of an education gap about them, whether or not they're free or where they're located."
