CHARLESTON — Hundreds of people have publicly opposed demolishing a historic Meeting Street building that allegedly has no structural damage and the owner has no public plans laying out why he wants to do it.

And it seems their voices were heard for the most part. The request to raze the primary of the two main structures was denied.

On Oct. 8, Eddie Bello of Bello Garris Architects went before Charleston’s Board of Architectural Review asking permission to fully demolish the buildings at 280 Meeting St. The property is currently occupied by Theatre 99, The Bicycle Shoppe and 319 Men — which announced it would be closing at the end of September after 36 years.
