BENNINGTON — Firefighters from at least three departments battled a stubborn fire Wednesday in a three-story building at Main and Safford streets in Bennington – continuing to pour water into the structure more than four hours after the blaze was reported.

One resident who lived in a third-floor apartment was injured and transported by Bennington Rescue Squad for treatment at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Bennington Police Lt. Camillo Grande said the female resident received burns when exiting the building down a stairwell.

Two town police officers, Sgt. Corey Briggs and Cpl. James Macaulay, were first to arrive after the 5:28 p.m. fire call, Grande said, and they started treating the victim’s burn injuries until the rescue squad personnel took over.
