MIDDLETOWN, Virginia — The chief of police for the Middletown Police Department in Virginia is recovering after he was hit by a car Wednesday morning. Detectives say Chief Gary Benedict was injured while trying to investigate a possible larceny.

Benedict responded to the 7600 block of Main Street around 9:30 a.m. Benedict made contact with a suspect. The suspect jumped in their car and drove away, striking Benedict in the process.

Emergency crews responded and took the chief to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been released.

The suspect wanted for hitting Benedict was later taken into custody after a police chase in West Virginia. They face multiple charges related to the case. The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation is ongoi
