NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Escaped Orleans Parish jail inmate, Derrick Groves, waived his extradition proceedings Thursday morning and will return to Louisiana to face charges.

Groves appeared before a judge in Atlanta and said, “I want to return where I’m from,” according to court proceedings. Louisiana now has 15 days to retrieve him, though he can be held for up to 30 days.

The court announced that Groves faces aggravated escape charges in Louisiana, an upgrade from the initially expected simple escape charges.

Attorney General Liz Merrill had indicated Wednesday that charges could be upgraded.

Groves is already serving a life sentence for two second-degree murder convictions and two attempted second-degree murder convictions. He
