KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Cases of the West Nile Virus are surging nationwide and in Missouri.
West Nile Virus is carried by mosquitoes and can cause serious, even fatal, illness in humans and animals.
As of October 9, 2025, Missouri is seeing a significant increase in cases compared to previous years.
Three people have died of West Nile Virus, and 15 others are hospitalized.
The Missouri Department of Health is urging residents to take precautions.
When outdoors
Use insect repellent, wear pants and long-sleeve shirts, especially in the mornings and evenings.
Dump any standing water outside your home.
Make sure all door and window screens are secure.
West Nile infection often presents no symptoms, but 1 in 5 may develop a flu-like illness with head/body aches and fever.
