If you wanted to know how the Blues were doing last year, their power play gave you a pretty good idea.

Before the Winter Classic, they owned the 28th-ranked power play in the NHL. Consequently, they had the 20th-best record in the league.

After the Winter Classic, they had the fifth-best power play in the league. And in the standings? Yep, the NHL’s fifth-best record.

So coach Jim Montgomery wants his power play off to good start to the regular season. They spent the last two weeks with their units together, gathering as many reps as they could in practice even if the game reps were sparse.
