AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - The Virginia Department of Education will award millions of dollars in grant funding to schools in the commonwealth for security measures.

Many of our hometowns will get money, including Amherst County, which applied for the School Safety Grant over the summer.

$250,000 was requested by the Assistant Superintendent and he’s grateful to be awarded $183,200.

Assistant Superintendent Tim Hoden requested 10 schools for the grant, and six were approved.

Those schools include Amelon Elementary School, Amherst Elementary School, Central Elementary School, Amherst Middle School, Manelison Middle School and Amherst County High School.

Dr. Hoden said the money will be put toward additional security cameras and radios, along with lock upgrades.
