SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) –For the past several years, LSU Health Shreveport has partnered with the Fundación Barrié, a nonprofit organization based in Spain, to give international students hands-on research experience in the U.S.
Through this collaboration, undergraduate students from Galicia, Spain — who attend Galician University — travel to Shreveport for nine weeks of summer research. It’s often their first time working in a lab and their first time in America.
The initiative was first developed by Dr. Monica Cartelle Gestal, now an assistant professor at LSU Health Shreveport, who once completed her own fellowship through Fundación Barrié. Inspired by her experience, Dr. Gestal helped create a program that allows Spanish undergraduates to train alongside LSU Health scientists.
