JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) -- Community voices are taking center stage in in Jackson as the city's Police Oversight Commission is opening the floor for residents to talk safety, share concerns, and have a hand in what happens next.

"How do you shape public policy without community input?" said Board Chair David Hammontree.

Created at the direction of former mayor Derek Dobies in 2021, the commission is hosting its first community roundtable in three years.

"It's outreach time to get a sense of what the community may think an oversight commission should be and to let them know what we are and what we can reasonably do with five people," Hammontree said.

Hammontree says tonight's focus is to gather feedback from Jackson neighbors and grow the commission with diverse insights.
