NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Cade Cothren, the former chief of staff to Tennessee’s speaker of the house, is asking a federal judge to hold off on sending him to prison while he appeals his conviction on charges of public corruption.
Last month, Cothren was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for his role in a fraud scheme to get state money through a lawmaker mail program. Cothren was also hit with financial penalties topping $37,000.
However, Cothren has now filed a motion asking the federal court to hold off on his sentence and allow him to remain free until the Second Circuit Court of Appeals hears his request to throw out the jury’s verdict in the case.
