COLUMBIA, S.C. — As Hispanic Heritage Month continues, some residents are voicing concerns about the lack of Latino representation in South Carolina’s state and local governments.

University of South Carolina student Derek Diaz said seeing more Latino leaders in office is crucial for visibility and advocacy.

“Descriptive representation is important because we physically see that there are Latinos advocating for other Latino voices,” Diaz said.

He added that Latino voices often go unheard in South Carolina politics.

“We need people to advocate for our voices and let us know that we are heard and we are here, and I think that with being a Latino we don't get a lot of representation and there's a lack of representation in the state of South Carolina,” he said.
