CHARLESTON, Ark. — The Chickamauga Nation is still fighting to keep the proposed mega prison from being built in Franklin County. After almost a year-long dispute over the Franklin County prison site, the tribe met again on Oct. 9 to discuss its history and how long it has been rooted in the area.

The Chickamauga Nation claims it has federal recognition, but it is still absent from the official list of federally recognized tribes, causing confusion and frustration within the tribe and among local supporters.

Justin Flanagan, Western Region Medal Chief of the Chickamauga Nation, said their goal is to educate not only the community, but the state, on who the Chickamauga are and what their rights are in the area.
