Edinburgh and other parts of Scotland could potentially be hit by 'heavier than expected' snowfall.

Up to four inches of snow could hit the country in just a matter of days with advanced weather maps predicting a potential layer of white around October 21.

10cm accumulations and snow depths are said to be most likely in the far north of the county with Scotland bearing the brunt of the wintry weather.

Temperatures could also plummet close to freezing, just a couple of degrees above 0C, the Record reports.

Snow flurries are likely to appear in the Scottish Highlands from 6am until noon that day, with data from WXCharts suggesting heavy snow will blanket its landscapes.

Edinburgh is also among the areas in the firing line as the snow spreads southwards.
