NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Residents in the tri-state area, particularly along the coast, should take precautions as a nor'easter is expected to arrive in the latter half of the weekend.

The coastal storm is expected to intensify on Sunday, ushering in rainfall and high wind gusts that could potentially contribute to flooding.

Current forecasts focus the heaviest rain south and east of New York City —across eastern New Jersey and Long Island — where 1–3 inches are expected.

Farther north and west, including northern New Jersey, the Hudson Valley, the Poconos, and the Connecticut River Valley, rainfall amounts will be much lighter due to high pressure driving dry air southward and eroding the system’s northern edge.
