HOUSTON (CW39) — Houston Mayor John Whitmire said he’s keeping his campaign promise not to raise taxes or fees — at least not until the city cuts waste and duplication first.
During this week’s City Council meeting, Whitmire said, “I don't know what you were doing at 4:00 this morning — I was worried about city finances. But just because the state will allow you, without a vote of the public, to raise the property tax rate, that’s not a good reason for doing it.”
He said the city's budget isn’t just about “dollars and cents,” but also about “trust and credibility.”
Whitmire continued, “I made a commitment when I ran — and it’s still a commitment carried out — that we wouldn’t raise taxes or fees until we cut out waste, duplication, and corruption. We still have some work to do.”
