Coachella Valley Unified School District has spent nearly $9.58 million on transportation overtime since 2016, as trustees call for stronger oversight and cultural change in the midst of a districtwide budget shortfall that has led to layoffs.
During the board meeting on Oct. 9, trustees criticized what they described as years of unchecked overtime spending in the transportation department. A district report showed annual costs exceeding $1 million, peaking at $1.56 million in 2023-24 and $1.31 million in 2024-25. Bus drivers accounted for most of the total, followed by monitors, mechanics and trainers.
