Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Friday announced the special election to fill a vacant seat in the state House of Representatives will take place on June 9, 2026. Despite a state law requiring such elections occur within 150 days of a vacancy in office, 252 days will elapse between the date the seat was declared vacant and the election to fill it.

Rep. Carlton Wing (R-North Little Rock) recently resigned his District 70 House seat to become head of Arkansas PBS. On October 1, Sanders declared the seat vacant and asked the state’s Democratic and Republican parties whether they wanted to have primary elections or choose their candidates through a convention process.
