SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- Cold weather is here, and one Syracuse nonprofit is stepping up to help people transition from the streets and into homes of their own.
For more than a decade, In My Father's Kitchen has been meeting people where they are, on the streets of Syracuse, giving them hope for a new life indoors.
Co-founder John Tumino says the mission becomes even more urgent this time of year. Just this month alone, four people have already been matched with housing providers, beginning their journey to permanent homes.
It's all part of the nonprofit's Street Outreach program. The outreach team walks alongside each person, helping them navigate every step, until they finally get their own keys. That is, keys to a bed, a shower and a safe place to escape the cold.
