TEXARKANA, Texas – A historic memorial marker near the former Howard Johnson hotel on Stateline Avenue in Texarkana, Texas, that was stolen in 2015 has been replaced.
An unveiling ceremony was held Friday to mark the replacement of the original 1969 Wavell’s Colony marker, now located on the Texas side of the line near the Federal Courthouse and U.S. Post Office.
The marker memorializes an 1826 settlement spearheaded by Scottish-born General Arthur G. Wavell, who agreed to bring upwards of 500 families to the Red River area.
The colony encompassed the majority of Bowie and Red River counties in Texas, as well as Miller County, Ark., which significantly contributed to the region's history.
