COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Traffic Safety Office is working to expand a program aimed at educating high school students about how marijuana affects developing brains and the risks of driving under the influence of the substance.
The program, called Shifting Gears, teaches teens how marijuana affects the body and mind and how it impacts the ability to drive safely.
"The curriculum was developed to help educate folks on the effects of THC, particularly on the developing brain," said Carol Lucio, regional manager for Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).
The program was developed by AAA Northeast and began reaching Ohio schools a few years ago with assistance from SADD.
Lucio said the program addresses common misconceptions among students about marijuana use and driving.
