PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A police investigation that started with a stolen car that had the suspect shooting randomly ended when officers shot the suspect near downtown Phoenix on Friday.

Police said the shooting happened just before 7 p.m. at 16th Street and Portland Street , which is just north of Roosevelt Street. The suspect was hit by gunfire and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Brian Bower said the incident started hours earlier when the person stole a car in the area. Police eventually tracked the suspect down and tried to stop the car, but the suspect drove off, Bower said.

More police officers, including the K-9 and helicopter, responded to the area to find the suspect
