New Law Aims to Boost Affordable Housing Construction by Overriding Local Zoning Limits
California’s long-running struggle to build enough homes to meet demand took a step forward Friday as Gov. Gavin Newsom signed new legislation designed to accelerate housing construction near major transit hubs.
The law, authored by State Sen. Scott Wiener (D–San Francisco), overrides certain local zoning restrictions and allows developers to build multi-family housing near public transportation centers, areas long seen as key to sustainable growth and reduced car dependency.
