An inmate at a Minnesota prison is dead after an apparent fight with a cellmate, officials say.

The Minnesota Department of Corrections says officers at MCF-Rush City responded to a report of an inmate down in a cell just before 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Upon arrival, officers found a man unresponsive with "obvious injuries." Despite life-saving efforts by DOC staff and emergency medical services personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary information indicates that an altercation had broken out between the victim and his cellmate. Investigators are working to determine what led up to the incident, according to DOC.

The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the inmate’s manner and cause of death.
