The Black Lives Matter street mural on Capitol Hill, the work of 16 artists that has both brightened a stretch of pavement and left an assertive cultural mark, has been defaced, with a letter with racist rhetoric found nearby.

The mural at East Pine Street and 10th Avenue was vandalized sometime between Sept. 27 and 30, according to the Seattle Department of Transportation. White paint was splashed across several letters of the mural.

SDOT said it is “working closely” with Vivid Matter Collective, the organization behind maintaining the mural, to restore the art. Artists came to the site Thursday to assess the damage, and crews will pressure wash the paint off.
