Phoenix City Council bid farewell to Deputy City Manager John Chan on Oct. 7, who is retiring after 33 years working with the city.
“John’s professionalism, his calm demeanor and deep commitment to public service has made such a meaningful impact, not only within City Hall, but across our entire community,” said Councilmember Kesha Hodge Washington.
Mayor Kate Gallego declared Oct. 7, 2025, “John Chan Day.”
Chan, an Arizona State University alumnus, joined the city in 1992. He has served in several roles, including community economic development director — after previously serving as deputy director — downtown development office director and convention center director before becoming deputy city manager in February 2023.
Gallego thanked him for helping to develop both Cityscape and the
