MEMPHIS, Tenn. – What started as a traffic stop near the airport turned into a chase through the streets of Memphis.

A Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) trooper said he saw a silver Mercedes with an illegally tinted license plate cover on Democrat Road near Tchulahoma Road Thursday morning.

When the trooper went to pull the Mercedes over, the driver sped off. An arrest affidavit says the car hit speeds of more than 100 miles per hour in a chase that lasted 13 minutes.

The driver stopped on Amanda Oaks Circle off Shelby Drive in Southeast Memphis. He got out of the car and tried to run away.

The trooper said he caught Jevontae Griffin in the backyard of a home. THP says his license has been suspended since 2022. Troopers also say Griffin dropped a gun in the same backyard. That gun had sev
