OCRACOKE, N.C. (WITN) - The North Carolina Department of Transportation has closed Highway 12 on Ocracoke Island due to heavy ocean overwash.

The road is shut down between the ferry terminal and the National Park Service Pony Pens.

The DOT has crews on Ocracoke working on the dunes this afternoon.

The highway is expected to remain closed, as well as the ferry between Ocracoke and Hatteras Island, until Monday at noon.
