As South Australia's nearly 3,000 surf life savers return to the beaches for the season, they have an additional challenge on their hands — inspecting for foam and discoloured water as the state grapples with its toxic algal bloom.

Patrols will step up to seven days a week at six metropolitan and two regional beaches, and will continue through to the conclusion of daylight saving in April 2026.

Premier Peter Malinauskas said while the majority of the state's beaches were unaffected by the algal bloom, the increased patrols would help people visit impacted areas with confidence.

"If you have any doubt in your mind about whether or not you should enjoy the beach this summer, look to those beaches, Surf Life Saving will be there every single day," he said.
