A £16 million bridge - labelled "frivolous" by a councillor - is to be finally be built with a council compelled to go ahead with the scheme despite the price nearly quadrupling.

Senior Worcestershire councillors explored the option of scrapping the Hampton Bridge project, which would connect the Hampton area of Evesham to the town centre, but were unable to do so due to "legal reasons".

Evesham Tory councillor Mark Goodge said: "I'm pleased the bridge is going ahead. This has been promised to the people of Hampton for a long time.

"We've had all sorts of delays and the new (county) council administration is cancelling things left, right and centre but I'm glad this will go ahead.
