AROOSTOOK COUNTY, Maine — A 31-year-old Brewer woman is recovering after she was shot in the knee Saturday during a bird hunting trip in Aroostook County, according to the Maine Warden Service.

Amber Oaks was injured around 3:30 p.m. in Hamlin when another member of her hunting party, 30-year-old Danielle Fernald of Freeport, discharged a shotgun while retrieving it from a side-by-side, wardens said.

Both women were part of a hunting party of six people, with two ATVs and two side-by-sides.

Oaks was riding as a passenger in a side-by-side vehicle when Fernald, who had exited the driver's seat, attempted to grab her loaded 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun from the side-by-side.
