Arie Drewes, director of SUNY Ulster’s New Start program, has been named a SUNY Basic Needs Champion, the college announced.

Since joining SUNY Ulster in April 2021, Drewes has served in various academic administration and program development roles. Since 2023, she has led New Start, an opportunity program focused on promoting academic success and economic mobility for adult and parenting students.

Drewes holds degrees and credentials from Boston University, Trinity College Dublin, Berklee College of Music, New York University, and Dutchess County Community College. She is pursuing a master’s degree in adult learning from Empire State University.

Drewes is one of five honorees selected from SUNY campuses across New York state. The recognition was announced in September by SUNY Chancello
